THE KINGDOM OF STONE

“I didn’t know there was a secret passageway to this room.”

Everleigh covers her mouth to muffle her surprise. She recognizes his voice from earlier in the night. His gaze absorbs the length of her body. His teeth graze his bottom lip. Everleigh fights to ignore the moisture left behind on his mouth. Strangely inviting, as is his scent. She knows he’s experienced, able to please. She could hear the other boy moaning with pleasure as she hid behind the bookcase.

She clears her throat. “I would like for you to let me return to my room,” she speaks, even though she has not been asked to. But what’s done is done. She’s spoken and now she must wait to see how he reacts.

The boy seems stunned into silence. He must be angry. Everleigh thinks back to what she’s been taught. How she should know her place with men. She reaches up, ready to remove the thin material from her shoulder, to expose her back to him. Perhaps a lashing would suffice.

“Just punish me so I can go. It can be our secret. I won’t tell anyone I know what you did earlier tonight in the library because I was here—behind the bookshelf.” This truth being the only weapon she has.

His head tilts. He knows the rules of their kingdom all too well. Girls speak when asked. They kneel until told to rise. This girl has done none of what she’s been trained to do. She stands tall, shoulders rigid, chin high, although the mask is hiding her face. He would prefer she remove it, but her defiance has his thoughts scattered.

He is intrigued—bewitched even. He’s never met any girl like this one. Making her a prize worth winning.

“Could you hear me?” she asks, confused by his silence.

He takes another step to close the gap between them. The firelight caresses his skin. He is beautiful, with pouty lips, sharp cheekbones and his bright blue eyes are nestled in thick, dark lashes. His skin is slightly tan, unlike hers, creating a contrast between them. He appears calm when he shouldn’t be. “I think I should know your name since you are threatening me, wouldn’t you agree?” He is seemingly unbothered by her. But it could be a trick; Everleigh doesn’t trust him. But the boy smells sweet, like lavender and honey.

“I’m only offering a solution,” Everleigh says, eyeing her escape. She could run, but what good would it do? He could easily follow her through the hidden passageway and back to her bedchamber. Her heart skips a beat at the thought of him entering her room.

She takes a measured breath. The scent of lavender is soothing, but his presence is not.

“That you have, but what if that isn’t what I want?” he asks.

She swallows hard, perhaps she had dismissed his desires too soon, thinking that she could offer him an easy way to end this without any trouble.

“What do you want?” she asks defiantly.

His eyes spark with amusement. Anyone else would obey his commands, allowing him to do with them what he desired.
